Tips on Preparing for your Newborn Session

  1. Let's schedule your newborn session a few months before your little one arrives to ensure a spot on the calendar since I only take a few newborn sessions each month. Your due-date will be penciled in on the calendar and when your little one is born, send us an email or text message to arrange the time of the session. Hey, we love to be on the first-to-know birth announcement text/email list!

  2. Newborns don't keep! The best time for a newborn session is between 5-10 days when baby hasn't yet discovered that being awake is more fun. You know those cuddly little poses that you love so much? Baby isn't so keen on those poses after 14 days when they really start to wake up.  Newborn ache and colic can flare up after the first 2 weeks as well although we always can edit it out.

  3. The majority of our newborn sessions are in our lovely studio in downtown Lafayette, but if you prefer to stay home, we can come to you (additional $75 charge) If the weather is nice, we can take the session outdoors as well, although that window is quite small here in Indiana.

  4. We have our own props, light, backdrops.. everything! Nothing is needed on your part except a baby (and maybe a paci if your baby is accustomed to it). If you have any special props or items you would like to include in a photo, please bring it!

  5. Babies want to be warm. We will be turning up the heat in the studio for newborn sessions and if we come to your home, we have a small space heater. If your home is on the cool side, why not bump up the heat for our session so that baby will stay asleep in those adorable curly poses.

  6. An hour prior to the session, keep baby awake if possible to ensure a sleepy baby when the session begins. Right before the session begins, tank baby up with a full feeding and keep baby undressed but wrapped in a loose swaddle so that we don't have to wake up baby when I take any clothes off baby for poses. As always though, we are completely flexible and will follow baby's cues to ensure he/she stays happy and rested.

Newborn Q&A

1. What if my baby won't sleep during the session?

Hey, it happens! Sometimes baby doesn't want to miss out on the fun and we will adjust to keep baby happy. If baby doesn't want to sleep, we will focus on lifestyle photos and beautiful awake moments and then try to swaddle and get baby to sleep again. If for some reason, baby just absolutely refuses to sleep, we can always reschedule for another time in the next few days (no extra charge) to capture those beautifully posed photos.

2. 4 hours is a REALLY long time for a photo session. Why does a newborn session take that long?

We hear yah! While we will try my best to keep the baby asleep during the posing and transitions, there are times when baby wakes and is hungry or needs a diaper change. Sometimes baby just doesn't want to settle and it takes extra cuddle time with the parents before baby is ready to fall asleep again. We allow extra time for this so that baby's needs are the #1 priority and capturing the photos comes next. Some babies are so sleepy that we can just zip right through the session, but others are just not interested in falling asleep and need some extra time.

3. I love all of the adorable poses but are they safe for the baby?

The safety of your little one is the number one priority during all of our sessions. We take very seriously the trust you put in me to pose and photograph your baby in the safest manner. Thus, we will not try any poses or positions in which that baby is not comfortable or there is a risk in any form.

4. I am absolutely so sleep deprived, that I don't think I'll have the energy or mental capacity for photos when baby is one week old!

We are parents too and totally get it! The beauty of a newborn session is that you really don't hardly have to do anything but feed the baby and we will take care of the rest. You can sit back and relax or hey, go take a nap while we are photographing.

5. I want to get photos of my newborn with my toddler but he will absolutely not sit still for one second. What to do?

There are several things we can do to capture those beautiful sibling shots even if the toddler is not feeling it. One option is composite pictures where we take a picture of the newborn, and a picture of the toddler separately in the same location and merge them together in post processing. Our goal is to keep everyone happy during the whole process and we will adjust to make that happen.

6. Honestly, I want an in-home newborn session but my house is a disaster and I really don't want you coming over and seeing all those dirty dishes in the sink!

Hey, we've been there (and let's be honest still are sometimes), but guess what, we don't need much space or a tidy Kon-Marie house to take gorgeous photos. Please don't stress. Our studio is available if that is a better situation for space and time.
